An Overview

Following the need to know and teach History, the undergraduate program of this major was launched in 1957 in the Faculty of Letters and Humanities, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. To expand the academic boundaries within the department, the Master’s degree program in the History of Islamic Iran was offered in 1992. Gradually afterwards, the Master’s degree programs in the History of Ancient Iran and the History of Shi'a Islam and the Doctoral degree program in the History of Islamic Iran were offered in 2008, 2011, and 2013, respectively.

The 9 members of this academic department share different expertise and experiences: 1 professor of the History of Ancient Iran, 3 associate professors of the History of Islamic Iran, 1 associate professor of the History of Shi'a Islam, 1 assistant professor of the History of Ancient Iran, 1 assistant professor of the History of Islamic Iran, 2 assistant professors of the History of Shi'a Islam, and 1 instructor of the History of the World.

The Major Goals

Given the important role of History in the fate of nations and organization of the societies, this field necessitates further attention. Since the Islamic society of Iran needs to develop the role of history in various cultural, economic, political, and social domains and seeing that universities are regarded as training centers for students of different majors in general and History in particular, an organized planning of History, tailored to the needs of the community and in line with the scientific developments in the world, is called for to satisfy the academic and administrative needs of the country.

Academic Highlights

B.A. Program

  1. 1.Undergraduate students are required to complete 138 credit hours within 8 semesters of enrollment toward the degree. This includes required courses (96 credits), elective courses (22 credits), and general education courses (20 credits).
  2. 2.Since undergraduate students of History, complete the required courses of Islamic History and its Historical Roots and History of Islam from the Birth of the Prophet to the Year 41 A.H., do not need to earn the credits for the general education courses of History and its Roots and History of Islam.
  3. 3.In order for undergraduate students to complete courses in 4 academic years, their semester load must range from 12 to 20 hours toward the degree. For students with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 17, a maximum of 24 credits can be attempted.
  4. 4.Students who are on academic probation with a GPA of less than 12 must elect a course load of no more than 14 credits.
  5. 5.Students who fail to achieve a GPA of 12 after spending 3 consecutive semesters (or 4 total semesters) on probation, may be academically dismissed from the University.
  6. 6.An unexcused absence from a final examination will result in a mark of zero entered for that course.
  7. 7.Class attendance is mandatory. Students who are deemed absent for more than three class sessions in a row will have a mark of zero entered for that course and will consequently be dropped from the course.
  8. 8.Students with a GPA of at least 17 who attend the 3 summer terms of the undergraduate degree program (6 credits each), will graduate a semester early.
  9. 9.Undergraduate students who rank first during the program are admitted into graduate courses without taking the entrance examination.
  10. 10.For further information about withdrawal, student transfer requirements, guest student requirements, major change, leave of absence, or academic and research regulations please refer to the administrative secretary of the department, Mr. Khaleghverdi.

M.A. Program

  1. 1.Students are required to complete the following courses within 4 semesters of enrollment.
    1. oMaster’s students of the History of Iran after Islam: 28 credits for required courses, 4 credits for thesis, and 2 credits for the computer training course.
    2. oMaster’s students of the History of Ancient Iran: 28 credits for required courses, 4 credits for thesis, and 2 credits for the computer training course.
    3. oMaster’s students of the History of Shi'a Islam: 26 credits for required courses, 6 credits for thesis, 4 credits for remedial courses, and 2 credits for the computer training course.

Note: The remedial courses for the History of Shi'a Islam (English for Specific Purposes, Ancient Arabic Texts, and the Computer Training Course) have no effect on GPA. Only a minimum grade of pass is required.

  1. 2.The semester load must range from 8 to 12 hours toward the degree.
  2. 3.A grade of pass indicates performance of no less than a 12 on each course.
  3. 4.Students who fail to achieve an average of 14 in two semesters, will be placed on probation and academically dismissed from the University.

Ph.D. Program

  1. 1.Students of the History of Islamic Iran are required to complete 38 credit hours (including 18 credits for required courses and 20 credits for dissertation) toward the degree.
  2. 2.A grade of pass indicates performance of no less than a 14 on each course.
  3. 3.Students who fail to achieve an average of 16 in two semesters, must take additional credits to reach the minimum GPA required for graduation or will otherwise be academically dismissed from the University.
  4. 4.Students must take their comprehensive exam by the conclusion of their 4th semester of study.
  5. 5.The minimum passing grade for the comprehensive exam (both oral and written) is 16.
  6. 6.Students must complete their degree within 9 semesters of enrollment.
