With the development of social, political, cultural, economic, and commercial relations with the neighboring country, Russia, and other Russian-speaking commonwealth countries, training Russian language translators together with teaching the language has been raised as a necessity in Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, the largest university in Northeastern Iran. Subsequent to obtaining the permit from the Higher Education Development Council, and providing the scientific board in January 2005, the department of Russian Language and Literature officially started its work by admitting 20 Bachelor’s students of Russian Language Translation. In order to strengthen the academic ability of the students and the faculty members, Ferdowsi University has made considerable efforts to purchase books, educational materials, and teaching aids from Russia for the library of the Faculty to enjoy the richest collection of educational materials. It should be noted that, all books and resources are the most recent and up to date ones in Russia. The department has a language lab equipped with advanced systems and features capable of holding written and oral exams at international levels.
Members of the department are of the best graduates of universities inside and outside the country. In addition to their active participation and presentation in national and international conferences, the faculty members have also published a considerable number of scientific books and research papers.
A number of 110 students are currently majoring in Russian Language and Literature at the undergraduate level. The admission statistics of the undergraduate students of this department to graduate programs of Tehran and Tarbiat Modares Universities is noticeable.
One of the most important activities of the department of Russian Language and Literature was the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Russkiy Mir Foundation of Russia in 2013. As a result of this MOU, the educational materials of Russian Language and Literature will be available free of charge for educational use by the Faculty.
To teach the Russian language to interested people and applicants outside the University, department of Russian Language and Literature has provided the necessary services through the University College and has also prepared appropriate educational packages for various groups of learners.

Students are required to complete prerequisite courses (18 credits total) during the first semester and general education courses along with required courses (135 credits total) in the following semesters. It must be noted that, the scores for prerequisite courses will not appear in the student’s report cards.
Given that students spend a semester on prerequisite courses, the expected length of time to graduation is 9 semesters. Yet, this department has developed a detailed course program for the students to graduate in 8 semesters.

Research Highlights
The department of Russian Language and Literature offers undergraduate courses only and thus research activities are not mandatory for students at this level. However, interested students may take the opportunity to get some research experiences as well.
